Diversity in the News

Assignment/Activity Title— Diversity in the News  Year— Sophomore
Skill— Research, Spanish Portfolio Category— Social Awareness

The diversity in the news project was a very eye opening project for me. In this project, we were put into groups to research minorities and how they are portrayed in the media and in the news. My group was assigned Hispanics/Latinos. Most of my prior knowledge about Hispanic culture and stereotypes is from Spanish class; however, this assignment helped me to learn bit about their culture first hand by reading Spanish Newspapers. I found this project very informative and interesting while making me socially aware.

My main section of the our project was Spanish Newspapers. I have seen such newspapers many times but never took the time to read any of them. Not only did this assignment increase my social awareness but it helped me practice my Spanish in a real life setting. I would read Spanish newspapers and compare them to more mainstream newspapers such as the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Unlike what I expected, I found that Spanish newspapers and mainstream newspapers are very different. This is not necessarily just a language difference, but the types of articles they have and how they are written. Also Spanish newspapers give more representation to the Hispanic community as opposed to the 2% they receive in most American mainstream media.

From these newspapers, I learned about events I never would have heard about in continental American mainstream news such as the Central American and Caribbean games in Veracruz.  Also something interesting about Spanish newspapers, depending on the region, the foreign section have different articles depending on the Hispanic demographic in their region.

This project has made me more socially aware because I was able to look at the world through a different perspective. I also have learned a bit more about Hispanic culture in America and how underrepresented Hispanics are in mainstream news. Through this project, I have become more socially aware of the Hispanic community.
