The first Quarter cinematic analysis asks each student to watch a film from or set in the Gilded/Progressive era and give a plot summary, a historiography, and analyze the basic hooks of the movie. My first Cinematic Analysis with Quiz show was not my best work. I did not know how to connect the plot summary to a theme without being redundant. After receiving my grade and looking over the plot summary, I realized that it was very bland. With my next cinematic analysis I made as many relations to the theme as I could to try to make the plot summary more interesting. It was during this process that i realized how many things a film has to portray it’s theme. Even the smallest aspects of the film portrays the theme.
Also I had never done a historiography. When watching a movie one does not question why it was created or if it is truly accurate unless it is obvious such as biographies or documentaries. I couldn’t see how a love story could have any historical significance to have a historiography. However, with further research and finding the dates of not what takes place in the movie but when the movie was released, it was very close to an important event in history which might not have been directly related, but the small things in the film connects them. Also I realized how lighting could affect the audience’s mood and how each character is feeling. This assignment taught me not only to look at the movie overall but to look at the little things because they are usually the most important.
